Our history

The BABYGAYS came into existence over 10 years ago, when a group of queer friends decided to form a hockey team. We participated in our first queer hockey tournament, the World Outgames in Antwerp in 2013. The fact that we ended up in last place didn’t make the experience any less special. It was an unforgettable experience!

We received the nickname ‘The BABYGAYS’ at this tournament, as we had the youngest players to participate. And that name has stuck ever since..
Look at these fresh faces:

From then on, the BABYGAYS participated in queer hockey tournaments every year, growing our community and working on our hockey skills. London, Stockholm, Berlin, we were there for all of it!

PinkHockey Pride Boat

2017 was an extra special year, as the BABYGAYS organized a PinkHockey boat for Amsterdam Pride! Over hundred queer hockey players form the Netherlands, Ireland, the UK and Germany celebrated pride and hockey together.

2017 was also the year we hosted the women’s tournament in our hometown of Amsterdam! With 7 teams and over 100 queer women and non-binary people, it was another milestone for the BABYGAYS.

Tournaments in Paris and Rome followed, with Rome being the first time we won both gold and silver with our two teams! And when COVID hit and the hockey tournament was cancelled, we set up an occasional team and played in the football tournament in Kopenhagen. The year after, we were able to end another great year with a tournament in the Netherlands, this time in Nijmegen.

10 year anniversary

2023 marked our 10 year anniversary. And we made sure to celebrate this joyous occasion! The BABYGAYS organized an epic party in Amsterdam for 100 of our members and our fellow hockey players from Ireland and the UK.

We closed our anniversary year with a great tournament in Bern.

As of right now, we are getting ready for EuroGames in Lyon!
